Summary

Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life。 But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one in the journalism community is more astounded than Monique herself。 Why her? Why now?

Monique is not exactly on top of the world。 Her husband, David, has left her, and her career has stagnated。 Regardless of why Evelyn has chosen her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career。

Summoned to Evelyn’s Upper East Side apartment, Monique listens as Evelyn unfurls her story: from making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the late 80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way。 As Evelyn’s life unfolds through the decades—revealing a ruthless ambition, an unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love—Monique begins to feel a very a real connection to the actress。 But as Evelyn’s story catches up with the present, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways。

Filled with emotional insight and written with Reid’s signature talent, this is a fascinating journey through the splendor of Old Hollywood into the harsh realities of the present day as two women struggle with what it means—and what it takes—to face the truth

Honestly the seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo is definitely one of those books you shouldn’t judge by it’s cover。 I truly don’t know what else to say other than just read it。 For me it was a beautiful read it was sad most of the time yes but the friendships and romances between some people had my heart growing。 Not to mention the insight into the showbiz life that I without doubt think probably happens irl too。 I honestly didn’t want to read this book at first because of the cover and the fact that Honestly the seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo is definitely one of those books you shouldn’t judge by it’s cover。 I truly don’t know what else to say other than just read it。 For me it was a beautiful read it was sad most of the time yes but the friendships and romances between some people had my heart growing。 Not to mention the insight into the showbiz life that I without doubt think probably happens irl too。 I honestly didn’t want to read this book at first because of the cover and the fact that I thought that a story about 7 husbands would b boring as hell but girl was I wrong。 Look at me now with a hole in my soul ugly crying at midnight in my dark room。 。。。more

I liked a lot about this one, very readable and page turning。 I’m not sure why, given the title, but I thought it was most effective as a romance and a wild but believable life。 We should all be so lucky to be as self-assured as Evelyn。Unfortunately I really didn’t care for the framing devices - the interviewer seemed like the rough draft of a character, and the gossip article snippets were so on the nose。 Let’s not get into the Shyamalan ending which made me roll my eyes。Overall though it was a I liked a lot about this one, very readable and page turning。 I’m not sure why, given the title, but I thought it was most effective as a romance and a wild but believable life。 We should all be so lucky to be as self-assured as Evelyn。Unfortunately I really didn’t care for the framing devices - the interviewer seemed like the rough draft of a character, and the gossip article snippets were so on the nose。 Let’s not get into the Shyamalan ending which made me roll my eyes。Overall though it was a good time - definitely worth the read。 。。。more

It physically hurts to think about how much I love this book and the journey it takes you on。 TJR has a real knack for making you feel like a part of the story and nothing prepares you for the heartbreak and pain towards the end。 I didn't guess the connection between Evelyn and Monique correctly so when the story came to an end it felt so much more satisfying as it wasn't at all what I expected。 Loved this so much!

This was not what I expected。 There were very strong LGBTQ+ themes throughout the book。 This story serves as a reminder that you never know what someone is actually going through in real life。

Meh。 This was so underwhelming。 The only part of the book I couldn’t put down was the last few chapters。 The entire rest of the book, leading up to those chapters was just meh。 I didn’t hate it, don’t get me wrong, but I would necessarily recommend the book to anyone。

4/5Wow, this book was devastatingly beautiful; I read it in a day。 Evelyn is now one of my favourite characters of all time because of her complexity。 Her relationship with Celia will forever be in my heart。 That plot twist had my mouth gaping。 The Hollywood vibes were immaculate。 I also loved Evelyn’s relationship with Henry。 I will never get bored of this bittersweet tragedy。 “The world doesn’t give things, you take things”“Never let anyone make you feel ordinary”

Great story that was a quick read, kept my attention and the story moves quickly from piece to piece but is nicely linked together。 Anytime I set it down, I was full of questions I wanted answered and couldn't wait to pick it up again。 The author does an exceptional job of showcasing diversity of characters and thought throughout the story。 Great story that was a quick read, kept my attention and the story moves quickly from piece to piece but is nicely linked together。 Anytime I set it down, I was full of questions I wanted answered and couldn't wait to pick it up again。 The author does an exceptional job of showcasing diversity of characters and thought throughout the story。 。。。more

This book is as captivating as the title character, Evelyn Hugo。 Evelyn Hugo, so real, surely we've seen her on screen but, no, she is fictitious, a film legend spanning the 50's through the 80's, a woman who is drop dead gorgeous well into her 70's but, who is she, really, and why are we fascinated with her? Jenkins, like she did with Daisy Jones and The Six, delivers a tale with sudden omg moments in a style uniquely hers。 The narrative, told in Evelyn's voice to her soon to be biographer, Monique Grant, a 30 something rookie writer at a major New York magazine--why her, why have a nobody write your memoirs?--begins with her childhood in Hell's Kitchen to her arrival on the west coast with her first husband and tells about each husband thereafter, how she rose to acting fame, screen celebrity, rich, famous and the big piece of her story: the real love of her life。 Maybe you saw her answer coming but, for sure, what unfolds, you surely did not imagine。 This is what she wants the world to know, the very real Evelyn Hugo。And in just a few pages from the end when Evelyn has told everything to Monique, she drops the bomb on why she chose this writer。 And, that, we did not see coming at all。 Jenkins makes a connection between Monique and Evelyn; Monique has broken up with her husband or rather, he with her and being the daughter of a white mom and black dad has been somewhat insecure in her self but listening to Evelyn's life story and motto of grabbing what you want when you've had nothing and making yourself into something, even if you never fit in--Evelyn's Cuban roots had to be ditched for her to survive in Hollywood--she has noted some of Evelyn's isms make supreme sense and eventually empower her to rise up and claim what she's always wanted, to write, be very good at it, succeed。 Evelyn, seemingly cold, ruthless, gorgeous gains everything she ever dreamed of but on one hand could count her 'family' and she loses them, one by one。 This is a big book, a book about one woman's intentional rise to screen fame and it is about family being not just or only blood, about friendship, truth, sexuality, sensuality, deep love, soul mate love, bisexual love, and, how, really, labels don't really matter at all。 Jenkins is such a superb storyteller making us fall in love with compelling characters, setting and plot and making us want more after the book is done。 。。。more
